This specialty course is a SeaTrek exclusive! Throughout the Caribbean there is a growing need
for citizen scientists to assist in monitoring, management, and education initiatives to conserve
coastal habitats, including coral reefs, mangroves and seagrass beds. In an effort to support
such work, SeaTrek collaborates with numerous government and non-profit groups throughout
the U.S. and British Virgin Islands. During this course students learn the content and skills
necessary to survey and draw conclusions about the health and dynamics of coral reef
ecosystems. Special attention is paid to assessing coral coverage and disease, the presence of
invasive and indicator species, and the population and distribution of fish and invertebrates.
Students collect and report their data and help educate BVI residents and tourists about the
marine environment. By the end of the course, students become more proficient divers and are
equipped with the tools necessary to investigate, better understand, and impact the world
around them.
