Day 6 / June 21 – Today was the start of our NAUI Intro to Scientific Diving Specialty Course. This course was developed by SeaTrek as a unique advanced diving and research component of the FATHOMS program. Today students completed a morning dive (General scuba skills assessment at Peter Island) and began learning species identification and the monitoring methods they would be using throughout the course. After lunch we sailed to Diamond Reef, Great Camanoe, to continue our scientific diver course. The students were amazed at how much they already learned about corals, indicator species, and more. We met up with the other SeaTrek boats at Marina Cay and stayed overnight. For our evening activity, we discussed and practiced our coral monitoring research methods, including the use of transects and quadrats to quantify live and dead coral coverage. We’re looking forward to seeing what adventures are in store for us tomorrow!
