Today we got up bright and early to do another awesome hike, the Ram’s Head Trail at Salt Pond Bay on St. John.
The students thoroughly enjoyed the vistas and exploring more of the island’s natural beauty. After our hike, we headed east to Princess Bay in Hurricane Hole where we enjoyed a two-hour snorkel through the mangroves and seagrass beds along the coast. There were several patches of coral growing and thriving there as well. A lack of development and the protected status from being within the Virgin Island’s National Park boundary help to keep these habitats pristine and healthy. The snorkel also afforded students the opportunity to experience firsthand the coastal ecosystems and creatures they’ve been learning about. After the snorkel, we returned to VIERS to tour the camp and lab. While at the lab, a couple of the scientists talked to us about their research. The camp tour was really informative and a great way to see green technologies and sustainable development put into practice. After some rest and relaxation, we had dinner and began preparing for our departure the following morning. We then concluded our awesome day with games and roasted marshmallows around the campfire. It’s hard to believe that it’s already time to leave the USVI behind. Tomorrow we’ll head to Tortola and settle into our new and permanent home on Outta Space, our SeaTrek catamaran that will transport us all over the BVIs.
