Are you interested in marine science?
If the answer is yes, our summer camps are the perfect place for you! We have biologists on staff to help you learn about all the marine ecosystems and creatures you’ll discover during your voyage. All SeaTrek students take part in our interactive marine biology presentations. If you want more exposure to marine science in the BVI, you can participate in more hands-on activities to earn community service, academic credit, or both! Since there is no better way to experience the marine world than diving in, all students will also learn to scuba dive and sail.
If you would like to learn more about some of the most popular science activities at SeaTrek, check out the links below:
- Sea Turtle Tagging & Monitoring
- Coral Reef Ecology & Research
- REEF™ Fish Identification & Surveying
- Lionfish (Invasive Species) Monitoring
Thinking about becoming a marine scientist?
Get a taste with an independent study project or an academic credit project! You will have the opportunity to work with SeaTrek staff biologists to develop a scientific project, conduct your own research, collect data, and then present it to the biologist staff and your peers.
With an independent study project, you will earn community service hours. If you are interested in earning highschool credit, then the academic credit option is for you. We will work together with your school to see if you can receive a science or physical education credit for your efforts.
If you are interested, the topics to pursue are listed below:
- Coral Reef Ecology
- Sea Turtle Conservation
- Reef Fish Identification & Surveying
- Sediment Composition & Presence of Microplastics
- Plankton Distribution & Identification
- Lionfish Monitoring
- Seagrass Ecology
- Or… bring your own idea!
So, you know what you are interested in, what’s next?
Whether your interest is community service hours, an independent study project, or academic credit, the next step is to email our Director of Marine Science to answer any questions and to help get you signed up. With our help, you can earn a minimum of 10 hours community service during your 3-week voyage, anything beyond that is up to you!
If you want to dive even deeper into the fascinating world of marine biology, you may want to consider signing up for FATHOMS (Focused Adventure Through Hands On Marine Science) voyage. In addition to the science activities listed above, SeaTrek’s FATHOMS students participate in two NAUI sanctioned dive specialties: Introduction to Scientific Diving and Marine Heritage Awareness. FATHOMS students also earn additional community service and academic credit hours.
At SeaTrek we are continuously striving to have a more positive impact on the tropical marine environment we enjoy so much. That’s why we have begun a partnership with Stream2Sea.com, an eco-conscious company that has formulated biodegradable sunscreen and body care products. To reduce the impact cosmetic ingredients have on our planet’s waters, including the coral reefs that are our marine biology summer camp playground, this partnership allows you to have a discount on Stream2Sea products all while supporting SeaTrekBVI.
To get your discount, click the banner (above) or go to the SeaTrek BVI landing page. Select the items you want and receive your 10% discount and make your 20% donation to SeaTrek’s ocean conservation efforts and student scholarship fund.
We can all do our part to protect the ocean and waterways that we love and depend upon. Supporting Stream2Sea and learning more through SeaTrek BVI is a great first step.
